The Precautions of the Sprocket Drive for Drilling Rig

How does the sprocket drive work?

The drive wheels of a rotary drilling rig mainly transmit power through meshing with the crawler, thus enabling the walking and movement of the drilling rig.

Which part is prone to damage?

The gears are the key structure for the drive wheel to mesh with the crawler and transmit power. They bear almost all the walking dynamic loads and are the most vulnerable parts. Under different working conditions, the degree of damage to the gear also varies to some extent:

  1. When frequently moving and adjusting the position of the machine in the sandy pebble stratum, the wear rate of the gear surface is 3 – 5 times faster than that in the soft soil stratum.
  2. In hard rock construction sites, tooth root fractures account for more than 40% of the drive wheel failures.

How to avoid damage?

  1. Optimize the process: Adopt advanced heat treatment technology and surface quenching technology to improve the wear resistance of the sprocket drive.
  2. Conduct daily inspections to detect potential hazards in advance:
    • Observe whether the gear tooth tips become flat and whether the tooth thickness is uniform.
    • Check if there are deep grooves or pits on the tooth surface.
    • Examine whether there are fine cracks at the tooth roots.
    • Rotate the drive wheel and observe if the meshing between the gear teeth and the crawler links is smooth. If not, check the crawler tension or the wear of the gear teeth.
    • After each operation, use a high-pressure water gun to flush the meshing gap between the gear teeth and the crawler to remove residues such as sand and mud.
  3. Standardize operations: Minimize human-caused damage. Prohibit sudden acceleration or sudden braking and avoid obstacles.
  4. Regularly maintain the machinery.
